Hazel and Dropbox Tue Nov 26, 2024 10:42 am • by tcgass
I use Hazel in combination with dropbox since a long time. I recently set up a second Macintosh running Sonoma as a kind of file server and wanted him to take over all Hazel rules with regard to Dropbox files and folders. As my Dropbox is relatively large and I would like to have the files physically available on the Sonoma computer, I have created the Dropbox folder on a second internal hard disc with a size of 4 TB.

Dropbox works perfectly on both computers and all files are synchronised. However, when I set up a Hazel Rule on the Sonoma computer, it is not executed automatically. A rule test shows me the green light for the relevant files and I can also select folders to which files should be moved when setting up the rules.

I suspect that it could have something to do with the permissions, but Hazel already has full disk access. A second assumption is that the internal storage addresses of the files could be different, as the Dropbox folder is located in the user folder on one computer, but on a separate hard disc on the other.

How could I solve this problem? Or did I miss some important thing when setting up Hazel or Dropbox on the second computer?

ok, here I am again:

Preview the rule gives me a green "Rule matches" and rule status also shows a "Rules Matched". When consulting the log, I see the following error message:

Hazel: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=256 "The file “Belege zum automatischen Sortieren durch Hazel” couldn’t be opened." UserInfo={NSURL=file:///Users/thomascgass/Dropbox/Folders%20Beruf/F&A/Belege%20zum%20automatischen%20Sortieren%20durch%20Hazel, NSFilePath=/Users/thomascgass/Dropbox/Folders Beruf/F&A/Belege zum automatischen Sortieren durch Hazel, NSUnderlyingError=0x6000006c6580 {Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=20 "Not a directory"}}

Does this give any more information?

Thanks, Thomas

What's the name of the file Hazel is matching here? Can you post details about the specific rule?

The file is a PDF file "R 231124 - Name of client.pdf"

The rule is simple and works on other Macs without any problem:

If all of the following conditions are met
Name starts with "R "
Date Last Modified is not in the last 1 minute
Do the following..
Move to folder: "Destination Folder"

In the error message previously postet I wonder why it reads "Code=20 "Not a directory" towards the end...

And it definitely is a folder and not, say an alias or symbolic link?

It's definitely a real folder. That's why I suspect there's something wrong in the datastructure, because my Dropbox folder is on an external hard drive due to its size. Could it be that Dropbox automatically works with a symbolic link or alias?

Possibly. Can you use the commandline? If so, try doing 'ls -ld' on the file.

sorry, but I'm not to common with command lines. I'm on OSX, so this would be a terminal command line, right? Could you give me a hint on how to do this?

- Launch Terminal
- Enter:
Code: Select all
    ls -ld

- Enter a space
- Drag in the folder in question. It will paste in the full path to that folder.
- Hit return.
- Send me the output.

That doesn't seem to be the output. You want to follow my instructions and after hitting return, text will appear. I need that text.
